Once in a Blue Moon

The server’s been down on my website so I apologize if you’ve tried to visit and found an error message. Things happen, and I’m glad to be back online. Hopefully it’s one of those things that only happens once in a blue moon. And since tonight is one of those rare “blue moons” I thought we’d talk about that.

Two definitions of blue moon exist. The older one is that a blue moon is the third full moon in a quarter with four full moons. By this definition, the blue moons occur at times other than the ones most commonly referenced today with the next one being August 21. 2013. Purists believe that this is the correct definition, but in the last few decades a newer definition has emerged and become the standard.

This newer definition is that a blue moon is the second full moon in a given month and occurs every few years. The last one was in March of 2010, and the next one after tonight won’t occur until July 31, 2015. A complete explanation of how the two definitions came about can be found here.

The folklore around the blue moon is popular in culture and crops up in TV shows, books, and songs. So, to take you back to 1962 and the fun do0-wop days, enjoy this version of “Blue Moon” by the Marcels with some great shots from American Grafitti.

And speaking of blue moons, Michael Morris, an incredible writer and all-around great guy has a new book out this month – Man in the Blue Moon. I’ve not read it yet, but the word is out that it’s fantastic! I read Michael’s Christy award-winning novel, A Place Called Wiregrass and can tell you he’s a wonderful writer. Please check it out!
